Overview

The Grand Mapillai Restaurant, tucked away in Shah Alam, Selangor, presents a fresh and vibrant take on modern Indian cuisine. Its location at 42, Jalan Pelabur A 23/A offers an inviting space that caters well to family gatherings and special celebrations, reflected in the heartfelt experiences shared by many patrons.

This restaurant shines most distinctly with its signature dishes. The prawn biryani and naadukoli biryani capture the essence of traditional flavors, with the latter often praised for its excellent balance and fragrant spices. While some fried delicacies like prawn 65 and gobi 65 occasionally face critiques for overly thick coatings, the core flavors remain promising. The unique mappillai vege thali set and mappillai lamb shank stand out as hearty options that showcase the richness of Indian culinary craft with a modern twist.

The beverage selection is equally noteworthy. The fresh milk masala tea and Nescafe Pasumpaal offer aromatic, comforting choices that pair well with the meal, though some customers have noted room for refinement in drink sweetness and consistency. Cold drinks like ice lemonade add refreshing balance to the rich, spiced dishes.

Service at The Grand Mapillai reflects a spectrum of experiences. From attentive and professional handling of feedback during lunch to moderate waiting times and room for warmth in customer interactions, the staff consistently strive to provide memorable hospitality. Notably, the restaurant’s private glass room for larger groups has received praise for its ambiance and thoughtful accommodation, making it ideal for birthdays and family events. The soothing background music enhances the relaxed atmosphere, encouraging guests to linger.

Targeting food lovers seeking authentic yet contemporary Indian fare, The Grand Mapillai Restaurant combines a welcoming environment with a menu that ranges from traditional thalis to inventive rice combos and snacks. Its appeal extends from casual diners to celebratory crowds hoping for a special gathering spot with a homely touch.

In summary, The Grand Mapillai is a destination where the richness of Indian spices meets modern dining sensibilities. While there is room to polish certain fried items and customer service nuances, the overall experience—marked by well-executed biryanis, heartfelt celebrations, and a family-friendly setting—cements its place as a valued culinary jewel in Shah Alam.

We had our lunch here today. Naadukoli Briyani – ⭐ 10/10, excellent. Prawn Briyani – ⭐ 8/10, flavour was good but prawns were fried with thick flour, which needs improvement. Lollipop Chicken – ⭐ 0/10, over-coated with flour and undercooked inside (we highlighted this to staff and they waived it off the bill). Fried Squid – ⭐ 5/10, again too much flour, taste not balanced. Drinks: Pasumpaal Tea – ⭐ 5/10, average. Nescafe Pasumpaal – ⭐ 9/10, very good. Prices were reasonable. Service was good and staff handled feedback professionally. Overall: Some dishes stood out (Naadukoli Briyani, Nescafe Pasumpaal), but fried items need improvement due to excessive flour and undercooking.

I have been to this restaurant a few times. Food tastes great. But the service is super slow, and we have to wait longer to get food and drinks. We requested low sugar in our drinks, but the drinks served with too sweet. Customer service was moderate. In terms of cleanliness, it is also moderate. Since I have been here a few times, I don't see any improvement in their services. It would be great if they could focus on customer service and have a pleasant smile when dealing with the customers. Overall, my experience in this restaurant is modest except for the food tastes

My two sons gave me a wonderful surprise for my 57th birthday at Mappilai Restaurant. He invited my friends and cousins, and I was overjoyed. The food at Mappilai Restaurant was very delicious. They provided us with a private glass room for 38 people, explained the menu, and ensured that everything was freshly cooked and served on time. They even played music while I cut the cake and wished me a happy birthday with warm, cheerful smiles. I felt truly happy. The staff patiently waited until we finished the celebration, as we were the last customers to leave around 9:25 pm. I sincerely thank the staff for their excellent service. This is my first time writing a review, and the whole experience was truly a memorable gift for me

We celebrated my mother-in-law’s 75th birthday at Ay Mappilai Restaurant in Shah Alam in March 2024. The food was really tasty, and the hall was very nice and comfortable. It was a wonderful experience, and the staff were very helpful. Highly recommended for family gatherings and special occasions!

This restaurant is a gem! It was our first visit, inspired by the great reviews on Google. We tried the chicken briyani, chicken pottalam parotha, chicken 65, and masala thosai. The chicken briyani was packed with flavor, and the chicken 65 had the perfect crunch outside with tender meat inside. The chicken pottalam parotha was rich and generously coated in spicy curry, while the masala thosai stood out as one of the best I’ve had—the masala potato filling was outstanding. I highly recommend the chicken briyani , masala thosai and chicken 65. We’ll definitely be back! To the shop owner: please continue serving food with the same delicious taste and generous portions with affordable price .

This is my go-to spot for incredible Indian food! It offers a luxury environment but with incredibly affordable, stall-level prices. I highly recommend trying their specials. I recently had the 'Purattasi Special', which was a magnificent, specially-infused version of a traditional Indian thali set meal. A truly wonderful and authentic experience!
